The reduced concentration of medicine via oral agents has difficulty attacking the infection when located in the bone surrounding the sinus cavities. However, referral should occur if complications develop or if the patient fails to respond to second-line therapy.
The major sinuses drain through a common tract - the ostiomeatal complex, which is located under the middle turbinate. The light is held on the lower rim of the orbit and the palate examined through the patient's open mouth. It is also usually quite clear when the patient does not have acute sinusitis if only one symptom or sign, or none, is present.
